I keep a few houses I would stay in myself: a cabin, a casita, a porch in the red rocks, and a Door County cottage.

A two-bedroom cabin on a dead-end lane in West Asheville. The main room is one long table, a wood stove, and a kitchen that actually has knives. Mornings are fog until the ridge clears. The bedroom downstairs has a queen. Upstairs is a loft with two twins and a ceiling you will notice if you are tall. There is no television. The wifi reaches the porch if you sit near the window. Dogs are welcome if they stay off the daybed. The road is gravel for the last quarter mile. A regular car is fine unless it has just snowed.

Beautiful and a little rustic in the ways that matter: great knives, thin towels, a porch that collected leaves. Wifi was fine for a call if I sat inside. The dog was happier than we were, which is the correct outcome.

The loft ceiling is exactly as low as Mara said. We put the tall one downstairs. The stove heated the whole cabin by the second night, and the lane was quiet enough that we heard owls. I would book the shoulder season again.
